PNG Sigri Estate

My wife and I sampled a new coffee this week that would cause me to do back-flips. (ahem - if I could actually move that way.)  This is a coffee from the Sigri Estate farm located in the wild of Papua New Guinea.

This offering is very smooth, and quite enjoyable.  The Aroma is wonderful as it possesses a warm cocoa smell that is as appealing as the ever popular Yemen Mocca coffees.  The flavor is very smooth and completely free of from any form of bitter. It possesses a slight sweet-nut note that is God given - completely natural.  Then to top it off all off this Sigri coffee is wrapped in a buttery-body that is thick and creamy on your tongue.

This is definitely a must try for every coffee enthusiast

Jeep C-J5

I was just 3-feet away from plowing my dad's Jeep into the living room of our house when I was 14 years old - I was learning how to drive a stick shift.  Dad said "Just give it gas and drop the clutch."  I did and if I had not jammed on the break when I had I would have been watching Cheers on the television from the comfort of my canvass seat.  I eventually learned how to properly judge the drive engagement with the feel of the clutch and proper engine RPM's and I became pretty good at getting that old Jeep to respond to my driving desires - well as good as a Jeep could I guess.

Ford F-150
A few year later a friend of mine had a work horse of a truck that had a three-on-a-tree manual transmission system.  The clutch was sloppy and had what seemed a 15-inch reach before it was engaged.  I think this allowed for any farmer to pull his trailer of corn or hay.  I am glad I learned how to drive the thing but I found that I easily tired just working the mechanics of the drive sysytem.

Porsche 911
Then one day in my 20's a friend of mine had a Porsche 911 that he wanted to sell and I took it for a test drive.  Wow!  What a difference.  The clutch moved about 3-inches engaging easily and quickly but it took a precise foot to feel the power and make the car dance - And oh-boy how it danced!  This precision vehicle begged to be driven.  The clutch system demanded respect and the steering system was precise as it ordered the road to bow at ever turn.  As I glided through the twisty road I was very aware how this driving experience was so much better than my dad's Jeep or my friend's truck.  The Jeep and the truck required mere drivers while the Porsche demanded a driving enthusiast.

It is interesting that I am reminded of this experience as I am roasting the Yemen Mocca Matari for people because the people that are tasting the Fresh-Roasted Yemen are experiencing the difference between driving a Jeep and making a Porsche dance.

When you taste the Yemen you cannot help but smell the strong aroma of cocoa - not sweet-cocoa like a Hersey bar but soft-cocoa like the homemade chocolate pudding your grandma used to make on the stove-top.  When you sip this cup the flavor is very balanced and smooth without any of the bitterness that is known in standard issue coffees.  The flavor in this brew presents smooth and it finishes clean leaving just a hint of the mocha flavor  that is characteristic to the Yemen region coffees.  Yes, this coffee will immediately inform you that you are a coffee enthusiast and not just a mere drinker.

I presently (2/24/12) have 25-12 Cup pots of this premium coffee in stock - at just $4.00 a pot which means that the Yemen will practically drive out of the burlap that it is in.  If you want the experience of a real coffee enthusiast be sure to contact me as I will be roasting again next Wednesday.

Coffee Demo for Birthday Party...

Tonight I am doing a coffee demonstration for a wife's (ahem) 29th birthday party.  First I am serving samples of regular Maxwell House coffee so that everyone can be remind of the norm, then I will be brewing up some Moccca Sanani from Yemen with filtered water.  It will be fun to see how high the eye brows fly up on the foreheads of people when they taste the difference.  I will be percolating & French-pressing the Mocca so people will experience the different tastes in brewing.  I will also be French-pressings some Organic Royal Select Decaf from Peru.

While all of this is going on I will be roasting a Monsooned Malabar from India.  This will be the crowd-pleaser because not only is it an awesome coffee it will be the freshest coffee that the guests have ever had and I will be making it in Syphon pots.  Can you saw fun?

CHANGING SUBJECTS...

There are only a few more days left for people to find the easter egg for September.  If you want to be entered into the drawing for the FREE coffee, take some time on the Anchor Bay Roasts website and find the easter egg.

The Sweetest 1 Tenth of 1 Percent (00.175%)

He was casually doing his work and moving along the hall when he noticed it - that smell.  He started walking to find the source when he came upon it - we were brewing the coffee and it smelled like heaven.  He inquired how much he had to pay for a cup but the church told the janitor that he was welcome to enjoy - no charge.  He did enjoy and now he will forever be a coffee snob.

I talked with the janitor at the school where our church meets at length about the attributes of fresh coffee.  Before I left he asked me if there was any coffee that he could buy.  I sold him an extra bag (2 pots for him) and he gave me $3.50 in exchange.  This is the sweetest $3.50 that I had earned to date because he was sold by the smell alone - the taste just sealed the deal.

I have been asked where I plan to find the "coffee snobs" but it appears that they will be finding me.

Coffee Sale...

Hi there.  Today (10/11/2011) I am offering 5 - 12c pots of coffee (12.5oz) for just $15.00 + shipping!

The coffee is a Mocca Sanini from Yemen - and it is fabulous.  The very moment that you first smell this brew you will be returned to the days when you stood over the stove and smelled your grandma cooking chocolate pudding.  As this cup cools you will experience a note of cocoa in the taste like a baker's chocolate - not sweet but rich.  This bean is nutty with a strong earth tone and begs to be experienced.

Email me now to taste this delightfully-and-artfully-crafted fresh-roasted single-origin coffee.

And It Begins...

I have been contracted to supply VOX Church with Fresh Roasted coffee each week.  This means that the people who come to church this Sunday (and each Sunday going forward) will be enjoying the (dare I say it?) the very most awesome best coffee available in the whole Anchor Bay area.

This week I will be roasting up a Yemen Mocca - Sanani and a Peru Organic Royal Select Decaf.  The Mocca is an excellent coffee which sports a faint chocolate flavoring that becomes more dominant as the brew cools.  The smell is like the smell of a warm chocolate pudding that grandma used to make on the stove when I was a kid.

The Peruvian has a fantastic flavoring which when roasted dark makes the taste-buds do a little dance.  This decaf has been water treated which is the mildest and most natural way to remove caffeine from coffee beans.  So if you do not have plans this Sunday join us at VOX Church and experience freshest cup of coffee in town.

And oh yeah, in case you are wondering.  When coffee is this good, you'll find that worshiping our creator takes on a whole new relevance in your soul.

Mocca Matari - 5

Yemen

Like school kids in the lunch-line on pizza day - this coffee made me happy.

The aroma was rich, thick, and warm like an evening fire. It was robust with nostalgia and made you say "wow". The flavor was as committed as Little Ann was committed to Old Dan. Thick and solid this coffee did not let you down, chasing down the ring tails of satisfaction.

That said, the Mocca Matari is a demanding mutt - as fickle as a cat. Some beans you can roast without too much attention and still brew a cup that contains the flavor that you expected. However, the Mocca in this bean will not be realized until it has been roasted quite dark - well into the second crack. Though the flavor is good at the cinnamon level the potential will still be in the bean waiting for the maturity that comes only with a fuller roast.

Mocca Matari - 4

Yemen

The Mocca Matari is my favorite bean (so far) but this batch seems to have the least amount of distinguishing flavor of all the times that I have made it. I think the problem with this pot was that I used my new burr grinder to grind the beans and I think it is just too strong. The body is very good and the mouth-feel is quite pleasant but the flavor is lacking. I suspect that when I learn to make grounds that don't make such strong coffee - the flavor will be back.

Mocca Matari - 3

Yemen

Can you say "YUM"?

This is now the third time that I have roasted this bean and I only kept it on the heat until the First Crack was about finished. I did not want to over roast these beans as doing so greatly diminishes the flavor. I once considered the Kimel Peaberry to be my favorite but I really think this one is the finer of the two. I must try them side by side to make a real determination but I will have to wait until I get some more of the Peaberry first. ;-)

Mocca Matari

Yemen

This is a great cup of coffee! The Mocca Matari has an exquisite aroma, from its ground City roasted bean to the hot brewed cup. It smells like warm chocolate pudding just like mom used to make which beckons the drinker to eagerly sample the cup.

The flavor is full and complex but most of all chocolaty! There are undertones of spice upon the finish but without doubt the chocolate flavor wins the day. The Yemen, Mocca Matari is a must try for all enthusiasts who want to know what it's like in Yemen.

From 1 to 10 I rate this coffee a 8.
